Listserv

The VAR Listserv is a free subscription-based interactive e-mail forum that allows VAR cavers (or anyone interested in Viriginia Region caving) to stay in touch. Any e-mail sent to the list is automatically forwarded to everyone else on the list. Message traffic is generally light, rarely exceeding a couple messages a week.

Our host, Virginia Tech, recently switch listserv managers to Google Groups. You do NOT need a Google account to use this listserv. All previous subscribers were automatically moved over to the new list.

The Listserv is moderated by Philip Balister. All subscriptions are approved by him, and he monitors all message content. In addition, the Listserv computers check all incoming messages for viruses before forwarding them to the list. The result is a well-run forum with no spam and no flaming, just good caving content.

For all of the instructions below, upper case is for emphasis only. The listserv is case-insensitive.

Subscribing

Send a short e-mail to:

In the body, please include a line or two describing your grotto and/or VAR affiliation.

Below is an example of a subscription message that Jim sent to subscribe. Use your own name on your e-mail, please. Shortly after subscribing you will get an acknowledgement e-mail that your subscription has been accepted, a message on how to use the list and a request to post a short bio. At that point you are ready to send your first message to the list.

Sending a message to the list

Once you are subscribed, you are ready to send a message to all of the other people who subscribe to the list. Sending a short bio of yourself is a good way to start. This is called sending mail to the list. For this you will use a slightly different email address than subscribing.
